At Port Property, providing safe, clean and well-maintained homes for our residents is one of our core values. Fire Prevention Month serves as an important annual reminder of the role we all play in keeping our homes and communities safe.
Each October, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recognizes Fire Prevention Week to raise awareness about fire risks and encourage safe practices at home. This year’s campaign, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focuses on lithium-ion battery safety and the everyday habits that can help prevent fires.
Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use daily, from smartphones and laptops to power tools, e-bikes and scooters. While these batteries are convenient and efficient, improper charging or damaged batteries can pose serious fire risks.
As part of Fire Prevention Month, Port Property encourages residents to review the following safety tips from the NFPA and take a few simple precautions when charging devices at home.
Safe Charging Practices
- Use the correct charger: Always use the charging cord and equipment provided with your device or approved by the manufacturer. Incompatible chargers can damage batteries and increase the risk of fire.
- Choose a safe charging surface: Charge devices on a hard, flat surface, such as a desk or table. Avoid charging on beds, couches or other soft surfaces that can trap heat.
- Unplug when fully charged: Once your device has finished charging, disconnect it from the charger to help prevent overheating and unnecessary stress on the battery.
- Be mindful of larger batteries: E-bikes and scooters are strictly prohibited from being charged or ridden indoors at Port Property communities. Always keep these devices away from building entrances, exits and evacuation routes.
- Know the warning signs: Stop using a device immediately if its battery becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks, produces a strange odor or makes unusual sounds. These may be signs of a damaged or failing battery.
Additional Fire Safety Reminders
Beyond safe charging practices, Fire Prevention Month is also an opportunity to revisit a few essential safety measures that help protect our communities year-round.
- Test smoke detectors regularly: Smoke alarms should be tested monthly to ensure they are working properly. If your detector is malfunctioning or needs attention, please contact our maintenance team for assistance.
- Keep exits accessible: Hallways, stairwells and building exits should remain clear of personal belongings and other obstructions.
- Review your evacuation plan: Familiarize yourself with the nearest exits and establish an emergency evacuation plan for your household.
- Report emergencies immediately: In the event of a fire, evacuate the building and call 911. Do not reenter until emergency responders confirm it is safe to do so.
Through ongoing property maintenance, fire safety inspections and resident education, our team works to maintain safe and welcoming communities for everyone who calls Port Property home.
We encourage all residents to take a few moments this October to review their fire safety practices and learn more about preventing fires at home.
