Our upcoming mixed-use development at 52 Hanover Street recently reached an important milestone!
Following the onset of construction in December 2021, 52 Hanover Street now officially has its entire steel structure in place. Set to become a vibrant live-work-play community in the West Bayside neighborhood, 52 Hanover Street is slated to open for occupancy in Summer 2023.
Last week, project partners and construction team members celebrated the placement of the final steel beam at 52 Hanover with a “topping off” ceremony.
Held to commemorate a building’s construction progress and honor the team involved, a “topping off” ceremony invites project partners and crew members to sign the last steel beam prior to its installation. The final steel beam also featured three items installed on top to mark the occasion: a branch of an evergreen tree, a broom, and a flag. Rooted in Scandinavian tradition, an evergreen tree is believed to bring good luck to the building and the rest of the construction process. A broom is included when the construction team has had a “clean sweep” for safety, and an American flag is placed to honor the country and future.
The steel beam featured the logos from 52 Hanover’s project partners, including the construction team at Penobscot General Contractors, Thornton Tomasetti, Acorn Engineering, Cube3, Capone Iron Corporation, Warren Mechanical, Sargent Electric Company, and Port Property. After a few words from Penobscot and our Port Property team, the final beam was placed and construction members and attendees walked across the street to Wilson County Barbecue at 82 Hanover Street for a celebratory lunch.
Once completed, 52 Hanover will feature 171 apartments, two levels of parking, and 6,500 square feet of retail space. The retail spaces will share a courtyard with 82 Hanover, which is currently home to a variety of local businesses. Activity from both will spill out onto outdoor patios – creating an urban destination and lively community hub for residents of 52 Hanover, neighbors and visitors to enjoy.
